HIGH POINT – A woman
sustained minor injuries in a traffic accident Wednesday afternoon after she
drove across a major thoroughfare and struck a building, according to police.
Nadia Kua, 41, of Northpoint
Avenue, was attempting to turn from Kirkwood Street onto Eastchester Drive
around 1 p.m. when her green minivan drove across four lanes of traffic plus
the middle turn lane on Eastchester Drive and off the southern side of the
road, High Point police officer J.T. Hodge said.
“She’s an inexperienced driver on a
learner’s permit,” Hodge said. “She said she just came across the
lanes, saw cars coming in both directions and sped up to try to get out of
the way. ... She pretty much drove straight across and over the curb.” The
minivan’s air bag deployed when it hit the front of Eastgate Electronics at
200 Eastchester Drive.
The front of the vehicle was
severely damaged. The only damage to the building appeared to be a broken
window.
Kua was taken to High Point Regional
Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Hodge said.
No one was in the vehicle with her.
She does not have any medical problems that might have contributed to
the accident, he said.
Kua was charged with having no operator’s
license, Hodge said. No other cars were involved in the accident.
Fred Wright, the owner of
Eastgate Electronics, said no one was inside the store at the time of the
crash.
Wright is in the process of moving into
the building from the store’s other location on N. Main Street and,
as of the time of the wreck, no merchandise had been put on the floor.
Wright said he had hoped to have the
move completed and be ready to open for business by Saturday, but isn’t sure
how the damage to the building might impact his plans.
