– The pending new owners of old firehouse No. 1 are well aware of its history and plan to preserve it.
G&J Styles Inc. is based in Archdale, and its owners and much of the staff are from England. They have been in Archdale for six years, said Richard Jordan, manager.
G&J also owns showroom space on the first floor of the old Beeson’s Hardware building across the street from Old No. 1.
“We sell reproduction furniture and antiques, so it ties in nicely with what we do,” Jordan said.
The old firehouse will need some renovation to bring it up to standards for the showroom, but G&J will try preserve as many of the historical aspects of the building as possible.
“We understand the importance of its history,” Jordan said.
Jordan, in fact, has been researching the history of the firehouse and last week spouted out a “Did-you-know ... ?” string of historical information. He was delighted to find that Wrenn Street originally was named Jordan Street.
On the Wrenn Street side of the firehouse, a plaque indicates that the building is on the National Register of Historic Places. That plaque, however, was supposed be placed at Market Square, said current owner Henry Froelich, who represents his parents’ estate.
“I was told by my father that it was received from the government for that (Market Square), and someone inadvertently assumed it was for that building and put it there,” he said.
“Now, it’s attached too permanently to easily get it off.”
