Friends mourn loss of former fire chief
ENTERPRISE STAFF WRITER
HIGH POINT – Those who knew Carl Shelton are remembering him as a leader
and a gentleman.
Shelton, who was a retired assistant chief with the High Point Fire Department,
died Friday at age 94.
“He was a very efficient firefighter, and not only that, but he was a gentleman
also. The guys who worked for him enjoyed working for him very, very much,”
said Jackie Baker, who knew Shelton
for 40 years.
Baker worked for Shelton
during various times at the High Point Fire Department. He said Shelton always
brightened the day with his sense of humor, but was still an effective
leader. And he loved fishing and giving to the community, Baker said.
Shelton was
dedicated to giving blood, donating more than 10 gallons in his life. He
also was a member of the Exchange Club and the Toastmasters Club.
Shelton retired
from the fire department in 1973, but continued his relationship with Baker
and others.
Baker said he last saw Shelton
at a retirement dinner during the summer.
“He was a great guy,” Baker said. “He will be missed greatly by many, many
friends and family.”
After retiring from the fire department, Shelton worked for Atlantic Insurance and
Realty. Cam Cridlebaugh Jr. said he knew and liked Shelton even before
they worked together with the company.
One of the things he will always remember about Shelton is his Brunswick stew. Shelton, he said, would
cook a big pot at Christmas time and give it to friends.
“He was a great person, a man of integrity, a man you could trust,” Cridlebaugh said. “He was just a top-notch person.”
