Fatal accident
Wreck shuts down interstate for hours

Authorities say speed to blame for crash

 ENTERPRISE STAFF REPORT
  HIGH POINT
– One person was killed Saturday and another seriously injured when a speeding vehicle wrecked on Interstate Business 85.
Hollie Dawn Atkins, of 5130 Blakeshire Road in Greensboro, was driving a 1992 Nissan Pathfinder southbound when she lost control of the car near the Brentwood Street exit about 2 p.m., according to the High Point Police Department.
The vehicle left the left side of the roadway, crossed toward the right shoulder and then back to left shoulder, where it hit the median guardrail, according to a police report.
Police blocked traffic in both directions on Interstate Business 85 between the S. Main Street and Brentwood Street exits for several hours while investigators examined the scene.

The vehicle began flipping in a “barrel roll” fashion down the guardrail in the northbound lanes, the report said.
The passenger, Jody Wayne Spurliin, of 2050 Keesee Road in Mc Leansville, was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Lt. Walter Heaviland said.
Atkins was taken to High Point Regional Hospital for treatment.
Police believe excessive speed was the cause of the crash. Shortly before authorities were notified of the wreck, calls were received from motorists of a vehicle traveling about 100 mph on the interstate, according to Capt. Steve Danford.
He said alcohol was not a factor in the accident, he said.
Police blocked traffic in both directions on Business 85 between the S. Main Street and Brentwood Street exits for several hours while traffic investigators examined the scene.
The accident was still under investigation by the High Point Police Department late Saturday. Charges are pending against Atkins.
