– Members of an unidentified family have taken refuge in the Howard Johnson’s Motel on Brentwood Street Sunday after fire drove them out of their home.
The blaze at 116-B Price St. in the Beamon Court Apartments was called in to the High Point Fire Department at 9:05 a.m. Saturday, according to Battalion Chief Randy Way.
The fire department dispatched seven units, including three engines, a pumper truck and a squad vehicle.
Three children were reportedly in the apartment alone when the fire broke out. One, an 11-year-old, “had small-sized second-degree burns on his right arm,” Way said.
The youngsters had reportedly tried to extinguish the fire.
No one else was reported hur t.
“It was a working fire on the second floor in a bedroom,” Way said. “The heat source is undetermined. Items first ignited were a bed, a comforter or some bedding.” Way said reports indicated the family of five had been given shelter by the High Point-Thomasville chapter of theRed Cross.
Darrell Hill, local director of emergency services for the Red Cross, said a disaster action team of two community volunteers responded to the emerg ency.
“They (family) have received assistance for food and clothing and are being put up at the Howard Johnson’s,” he said.
Neither the Red Cross nor the fire department would identify the family Sunday
