Dedication deserves recognition
O
ne of my duties as a battalion chief is the Employee Recognition Committee.
I’m in charge of a committee that evaluates and recommends awards for employees who perform above and beyond the call of duty. Employees are recommended by their peers to receive these awards that range from community service to the award for heroism, which is our highest honor.
I have always considered it a high honor to serve on this committee. Each year as I read the many recommendations, I find a renewed pride in being a member of the High Point Fire Department.
I am continually amazed at the dedication and willingness of the men and women who ride the fire trucks to serve their community. It takes everyone from the fire chief to the newest employee to run a successful organization, but it is the firefighters who contact the public on a daily basis who speak the loudest for our department. It is their continued willingness to go above and beyond what is required each day that will help us achieve our goal of becoming the ultimate fire services organization.
On Jan. 25, we held our awards ceremony for 2006.
I had the opportunity to hand out certificates to many employees whose peers felt that they had performed above and beyond the call of duty. I also had the opportunity to hand out certificates to those who were promoted to higher levels of responsibility.
It was a moment to be proud, and I want to thank each of you who crossed the stage that night for your willingness to serve and make the High Point Fire Department a organization that each of us can be proud to be a part of.
How does all this affect you if you’re a citizen of High Point or someone who is visiting? It means that each day the employees of the fire department are going to do their best to provide you with the high level of service you deserve. It means we will continue to look for ways to improve our service to you as we continue through 2007. But maybe the most important thing is that in a time when it seems most news is about all the bad that happens in this world, it’s just good to know that people are still willing to step up and help others who are in need and that caring and compassion still exists and has not become a thing of the past.
