HIGH POINT – The second fire station to be relocated got its
first boost along the way Monday.
High Point City Council authorized the purchase of nearly 2 acres at
Old Winston Road
and E. Bellevue Avenue
for $300,000.
Fire Chief David Taylor said the department would relocate the Fisher Avenue
station to the new facility that’s projected to cost $1.5 million to build.
“The way we’re currently deployed, the stations are fairly close
together,” Taylor
said. “We saw this as an opportunity to be able to provide service to a
greater number of people without compromising current service and without
adding staff.”
The relocation of the Fisher
Avenue station (Station 4) and the relocation
of Station 3 to Chestnut and Westchester
drives were part of the November 2004 bond referendum overwhelmingly
approved by city voters.
“The stations downtown are fairly close together,” Taylor said. “We’re growing to the north
and the west.
“This relocation puts us in a position to reach a larger number of
people within our standard response time of 5 minu
tes.” The new station will be onestory
and up to 11,000 square feet.
“The current plan calls for a three-bay station,” Taylor said. “It will house an engine
company, a squad company and our rescue apparatus.”
The Fisher Avenue
station will be kept and renovated into a maintenance facility.
“We needed a mechanical shop,” Taylor
said. “That gives us a better facility for a maintenance shop.” The new
station’s design should be completed by June or July. Construction will
take about a year. Taylor
said the department hopes to be able to move into the new Station 4 by
summer 2008. nmaheras@hpe.com" target="_blanks">
