Citizens Academy
to start again
On
Feb. 20 the High Point Fire Department will
start its second annual Citizens
Academy.
This is a tremendous opportunity for anyone who is 18 or older and has an
interest in how the High Point Fire Department works. The class will last 11
weeks and will cover a wide array of subjects, which will give you a behind-thescenes look at how a major city fire department
works.
You’ll learn about fire behavior and the dangers fire fighters face when
entering burning buildings.
Learn about firefighter gear and the use of the self-contained breathing
apparatus. Learn how fire investigators determine the cause of a fire from
what appears to be little or no evidence.
Learn about CPR and the use of the automatic external defibrillators that
have turned into a real lifesaver.
Find out what it’s like to be part of one of the specialty teams that include
rope rescue, trench, structural collapse, confined space and water rescue.
When this class is over you will understand why being a part of a team and
being a part of the firefighter family is so important to us in the fire
service.
This class is set up to encompass a wide range of interests. Maybe you have a
spouse or family member who is a firefighter and you would like to have a
better understanding of their job.
This is the class for you.
Could be you are a person who likes to take every opportunity to expand your
horizons and learn new things. This is the class for you. Maybe you are
interested in a career in the fire service but don’t have an understanding of
what is involved in being a firefighter. This is most definitely the class
for you.
The class will be taught by members of the High Point Fire Department and
will be an eye-opening experience for all who attend.
Most of the classes will involve some hands-on work with no one being pushed
beyond what is comfortable for them. We want this to be fun, not scary.
Openings for the class are still available so if you’re interested contact Denita Lynch at 883-8551 or e-mail her at Denita.Davis@High

We welcome the opportunity to share our love of firefighting with each of
you who choose to attend the Citizens
Academy. Whether you
just want to learn or you’re exploring a new career path,we look forward to meeting each of you.
